Multi-faceted Approach Examining Violence in Target Areas
VOCC offers outstanding professional training on a wide variety of topics that will enhance the attendee’s knowledge and abilities when dealing with violence in their community.
The 2 day, 16 hour conference will focus on vital issues facing professionals and law enforcement in the community responding to, and controlling violence in the identified target area. This information is normally taught in a forty 40 hour seminar, but is condensed and tailored for community professionals.
The 2nd Annual Violence in Our Community Conference aims to advance the knowledge of mental health workers, clergy, business & community leaders and law enforcement official’s response to violence in their target area. The conference attracts the nation's leading medical, public health, law enforcement and family violence experts from across the U.S. with increased national participation. Workshops, poster presentations, and plenary sessions highlight the latest research and most innovative clinical responses to domestic violence, with a focus on the work being done by physicians, physician assistants, dentists, nurses, nurse midwives, mental and behavioral health providers, social workers, domestic violence experts, and others.
Dr. Harry L. Ross is a nationally recognized Political Pollster, Consultant, Behavioral Scientist specializing in Family and Domestic Violence, Teenage Violence and Publisher of the rossreportnews.net. He is a former classroom teacher in the Pontiac Michigan and the Atlanta Public School Systems.
- To assure that attendees possess a thorough understanding of the dynamics of violence in the community.
- To appreciate the necessity of interdisciplinary responses to address community violence and to perceive the role of political and cultural institutions in influencing societal and legal responses to various forms of community violence.
- To increase the attendees understanding and empathic response to community violence victims
- To increase the attendees knowledge of available community resources.
Research shows clearly that certain factors in the social environment contribute to violence, and certain factors protect people from succumbing to violence. While true, we still see vast differences in individual responses, even given similar environmental conditions. VOCC suggests that a crucial variable is being left out of the equation that may hold the key to achieving greater efficacy in violence prevention. To help a person change who has a proclivity toward violence, or to prevent it in the first place, we must understand the internal ingredients that make someone respond violently. Once understood, people are in a position to see the ingredients for what they are and to do something about them. Without knowing what is going on, this is impossible. This session will present this understanding, and violence prevention programs will gain more efficacy as a result.

Violence is a major public health issue affecting the mental, physical, emotional, financial and spiritual health of a community. Since 1999, through our training we are convinced that education, awareness and prevention efforts are key components to reducing the prevalence of violence and its devastating impact on society.
VOCC will address the types of violence and the ways it affects our lives in the community. Attendees will be given the opportunity to identify forms of violence, which may include, family, workplace, media, school, violence against animals, and other forms of violence in a community. Many times individuals respond to violence by physical or health reactions, fear, and post-traumatic stress disorder.
A certificate of completion will be awarded to attendees of the Violence in Our Community Conference.
VOCC conferences will focus on an integrated approach to viewing violence in a community.

• The safety and well-being of victims of violence in a community (primarily women and children) are first priority.
• An accountable criminal justice system must provide a consistent back-up to nonviolence and community partnership.
• Each cultural group must know their own strengths and vulnerabilities. Culture and identity are complex ideas that describe who we are. Gender, race, class, orientation, age, ability and other elements combine to give a snapshot of a person's reality.
• Effective ways of stopping violence in a community against innocent parties and/or individuals. VVOC conference spotlights the knowledge and experience of those who are marginalized by the dominant culture.
• Effective dialogue includes listening and understanding more than having to be understood.
• Research and evaluation can show us what works, and where we need to focus new light. This conference identifies research that guides practice and uncovers new ways to evaluate our work.
The deadline for registration is five 5 days prior to conference. The fees for the conference is $125.00 (single day) and/ or $165.00 for both days.
